Burnley vs Watford postponed after Covid outbreak as second midweek Premier League game called off
The Premier League clash between Burnley and Watford has been postponed due to an ongoing Covid-19 outbreak within the visiting team.
Burnley was due to host Watford on Wednesday night, but a number of cases alongside Claudio Ranieri have seen a second Premier League game postponed to midweek.
News of the game’s postponement came just over two hours before kick-off, with Watford missing the first-team footballers required to play the game.

Brentford’s Manchester United fixture was called off earlier in the week, as a number of other clubs are dealing with cases within their squads as the more transferable Omicron variant places new pressure on fixtures .
The Premier League announced a return to “emergency measures” this week, including more regular testing and tighter distancing rules.
Leicester and Tottenham, who were unable to complete their game against Brighton on Sunday, have confirmed that each have received a request to postpone their meeting denied by the league.
A Premier League statement read: “It is with regret that the Premier League board has postponed Burnley FC’s home game against Watford FC, which is due to be played tonight (Wednesday 15 December) at 7:30 p.m.
“The decision was made following advice from medical advisers due to an ongoing Covid-19 outbreak within the Watford team. As a result, the club have an insufficient number of first-team players available to fill the game.
The Premier League understand that the move will disappoint and frustrate fans who were to attend tonight’s game and apologize for the inconvenience and disruption caused at such short notice.
“In light of the recent increase in Covid-19 cases across the country, the Premier League has reintroduced emergency measures. These include protocols like more frequent testing, wearing face covers indoors, respecting social distancing, and limiting treatment time. “
Burnley’s postponement against Watford came on the day the UK recorded its highest total of single-day positive cases.
