Is the SEC the best league in college football?

Recently, Athlon Sports ranked the ten Power Five and Group of Five conferences and named the Southeastern Conference as the best college football league:

“It may have gotten boring for the rest of the nation, but the SEC still benefits from its position at the top of the college football world. The league has sent at least one team to the college football playoffs every season, producing Historically excellent teams the last two seasons in 15-0 LSU (2019) and 13-0 Alabama (2020). Bama has some holes to fill, but when you recruit at Nick Saban’s level, filling the holes is the least of your worries . Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M have gradually built up a power that is poised to assume the throne should the King fall. In the East, Florida is the defending champion, but Georgia is the base favorite. of his recent recruiting prowess – although we all continue to wait for the Dawgs’ success in the field to match their success in the salon. ”

For Texas A&M fans and school administrators, this is further validation of the decision to leave the Big 12 after the 2011 season for the SEC.

It could be argued that A&M could have stayed in the Big 12 or moved to another lesser league for an easier schedule, but playing in the toughest conference in the country turned out to be the right move for him. program.

This forced the Aggies to improve quickly once they felt the pressure from the SEC. This ultimately led to the departure of former head coach Kevin Sumlin for a proven winner at Jimbo Fisher.

While Alabama has pretty much dominated not only the SEC but all college football since Nick Saban took over in 2007, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and LSU have all played for national championships during that time.

The SEC always seems more balanced than other conferences like the ACC, Big 10 and Big 12, controlled by Clemson, Ohio State and Oklahoma respectively.

Many SEC purists complain that A&M hasn’t been competitive since joining the league. But the Aggies’ top-ranked teams since WWII, the 2012 and 2020 teams, have become members of the SEC.

A&M has been able to improve the league’s image with its own success with three straight bowl wins, including two against ACC opponents, and a top ten by most outlets at approaching 2021.

This A&M decision to join the SEC looks pretty good right now. Not just for the Aggies, but for the whole league.
