Middlesbrough considering transfer for South American defender

Middlesbrough is considering a January move for 20-year-old Brazilian right-back Heitor Rodrigues, according to a report from South American publication Torcedores.

They claim Boro is expected to bid in the region of RL32.9million, which equates to just over £ 5million, but his current club Internacional are unwilling to accept less than £ 10million. sterling for the young.

Rodrigues is also the subject of interest from Italy’s Serie A side Fiorentina, but no official offer has been made for his signing.

Quiz: do you know which club these 28 former Middlesbrough players play in?

He has played 17 times this season in the Brazilian Premier League as well as four times in the Copa Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the UEFA Champions League.

This part of the world is an area Boro has already addressed this year with the summer acquisition of midfielder Martin Payero from Argentina team Banfield.

After a rocky start to life at Teesside, Payero scored his first goal for the club against Cardiff City this weekend and new director of football Kieran Scott appears to be considering another raid abroad as 2022 approaches.

The verdict

Much like Payero’s signing, it appears to be influenced by the new Riverside Stadium scouting squad and seems to be a sign of the direction the club is heading.

Rodrigues seems very well rated in his country, hence the price imposed on him, so it will take some negotiations for Boro to bring him to their club.

It also depends on the funds available in January, with a significant amount – in the order of £ 6million – poured into Payero this summer.

The right-back is however an issue with Anfernee Dijksteel struggling with muscle issues and Darnell Fisher long term with a knee injury, so it can be a worthwhile investment.
