Scam call center dismantled, five people arrested | Ahmedabad News

AHMEDABAD: Sarkhej police in the wee hours of Tuesday dismantled scam call center‘and arrested five people for deceiving US citizens into using the affordable payday loan trick.
The accused have been identified as Ravi Bind, 28, Kishan Barad, 24, from Junagadh; Rutvik Pandya, 24, Krishna Prasad, 28, from Gir-Somnath; and Abhishek Nirmal, 27, from Banaskantha.
According to the FIR filed with Sarkhej Police, Deputy Police Inspector DD Chudasma received information that some people were running an illegal call center at the Siddhivinayak Commercial Tower in Makarba.
The accused called American citizens and told them that they had been shortlisted for a payday loan, for which they would have to buy Walmart gift certificates and give the voucher number to the accused. Once the target gave them the coupon number, the accused would get the money collected by other accomplices.
The defendants used a MagicJack device to place calls to their targets over the Internet, the FIR said.
The cops also seized seven cell phones, five computers, a laptop, a MagicJack device and a wifi router, worth a total of Rs 1.54 lakh. The five defendants were charged with breach of trust, cheating, criminal association and also under the articles of the law on information technology.
