Tarleton’s Devin Hafford named AP FCS All-American

Add another accolade to Tarleton defensive back’s long list of accomplishments Devin Hafford.

Hafford was named Tuesday to the 2021 Associated Press FCS All-America team. He earned second-team honors by becoming the first All-American in the NCAA Division I era of Tarleton.

Defensive backs Jordan Jones (Rhode Island), Koby Perry (Austin Peay), Brandon Dowdell (Chattanooga) and Montrae Braswell (State of Missouri) join Hafford in the second team. In the first team of defensive backs are Justin Ford (Montana), Christian Benford (Villanova), Darius Joiner (Western Illinois), Johnathan Edwards (Austin Peay) and Decobie Durant (South Carolina State).

This is the second season that Hafford has received the All-American label. In 2018, he was D2CCA Second Team All-American, AP Second Team All-American and Don Hansen Honorable Mention All-American. He is one of 72 players in Tarleton High School football history labeled All-American, and one of 36 during the time of the NCAA program.

Hafford was the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and the WAC’s First All-Star Team this season. He recorded six interceptions, two fumble recoveries, seven breakage passes, 50 total tackles (25 solo) and 3.0 tackles for a loss.

His eight takeaways were tied for third in all of NCAA Division I, counting both FBS and FCS. His six interceptions were tied for fourth in Division I overall. They were also tied for sixth with the most interceptions in a single season in Tarleton football history, nearing two the best in one. season in the total run of the program. Hafford had three multiple take-away games, tied for the most such games in the country. He won the WAC Defensive Player of the Week after two interceptions, two breakage passes and seven tackles against Midwestern State.

In six seasons since 2016, Hafford has helped the Texans go 35-21 in their 56 games on the field, totaling 243 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 12 steals, 57 passes defended. , one FF and four fumble recoveries. His 12 picks are tied for third in a Texan’s career, two off the record. He was also LSC Defensive Back of the Year and All-LSC First Team in 2018, as well as All-LSC Second Team in 2017.
